Sierra Leone Energy Minister tenders resignation over power supply

Alhadji Kanja Sesay

Alhadji Kanja Sesay, Sierra Leone’s minister of energy, on Friday, resigned from his position.

According to a statement by the president’s office, this isn’t unconnected with recent interruptions to the country’s electricity supply.

Sesay resigned a few hours after the government gave Turkish Karpowership and Transco-CLSG group a total of $18.5 million in power payments.

The two producers were due a total of $40 million by Sierra Leone.

“We are pleased to confirm that the electricity supply has returned to full capacity in Freetown,” the Turkish group said in a statement after the latest payment was announced.

Following Sesay’s exit, the ministry has been placed under the direct supervision of President Julius Maada Bio, who will be assisted by two other officials.
