The Nigerian Police Force has summoned Joe Ajaero, president of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), for an investigation regarding allegations of terrorism financing, treasonable felony, cybercrime, and related offences.
The invitation, dated 19th August 2024, was signed by ACP Adamu Muazu on behalf of the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Intelligence Response Team, warning that a warrant of arrest will be issued if Ajaero fails to appear.
In response, NLC’s Head of Communications, Benson Upah, linked the invitation to a recent police raid on the union’s headquarters.
He suggested that the raid and current developments may be politically motivated, noting that the NLC had previously advised the government to engage in dialogue with protest organizers and had criticized the high casualty rates during protests.
Upah raised concerns about potential threats to Ajaero’s safety, emphasizing that the police should be held accountable if anything happens to the NLC leadership.
