Oyo raises People With Disabilities’ budget by 70%

Sèyí Mákindé, Governor of Oyo State

The Oyo State Government has significantly increased the 2025 capital budget allocation for Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) by over 70% compared to 2024.

Governor Seyi Makinde announced this during the 2024 Stakeholders Summit and International Day of PWDs celebration in Agodi, Ibadan.

Represented by his deputy, Bayo Lawal, Governor Makinde highlighted the government’s efforts to support the disability community over his four-year administration.

He noted that the capital budget for PWDs has been raised to N877,500,000 from the initial N492,000,000, following requests made during the last Budget Town Hall meetings. Additionally, the overhead cost for the state Agency for Persons with Disabilities has increased from N315,000,000 to N345,000,000.

Makinde emphasized that these funds would address various needs, including transportation empowerment, training for relevant agencies, compliance enforcement, and the purchase of assistive devices and mobility equipment. He also mentioned the recruitment of 510 PWDs into the state civil service and directed that each ministry must protect the quota for PWDs.

Upon assuming office on May 29, 2023, Makinde appointed Ayodele Adekanmbi as the pioneer Director-General of the state Agency for PWDs and Timothy Olufemi as the Executive Assistant to the Governor on Disability Matters to ensure inclusive governance.

Makinde also highlighted that disability cluster groups’ grants and subventions have been approved, and three operational vehicles will soon be delivered to the Agency for Persons with Disabilities. He proudly noted that he is the first governor to politically empower PWDs by appointing them as Supervisory Councilors and Special Assistants across all local governments in the state.

The Director-General of the state Agency for Persons with Disabilities, Adekanmbi, praised Makinde’s administration for its commitment to providing opportunities for PWDs and improving access to governance and quality services.
