After several postponements, Brigadier General Olakunle Oluseye Nafiu, the Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), has announced that all corps members will begin receiving their new monthly allowance of ₦77,000 in March 2025.
This increase aligns with the federal government’s commitment to improving the welfare of young graduates participating in the mandatory service scheme.
Key Details:
- Allowance Increase: The new allowance represents a significant rise from the previous ₦33,000 monthly stipend, following the approval of the new minimum wage bill in May 2024.
- Announcement: Brigadier General Nafiu made the announcement during his visit to NYSC Zonal Offices in Wuse and Garki, Abuja. He assured corps members that the funds would be disbursed promptly and encouraged them to remain dedicated and disciplined.
- Budgetary Allocation: The federal government allocated ₦430.7 billion to the NYSC in the 2025 budget, with ₦372.9 billion earmarked specifically for corps members’ allowances.
- Corps Members’ Reaction: The announcement has been met with relief and optimism, as many corps members have struggled with the rising cost of living. Some expressed gratitude for the increase, while others remain cautiously optimistic about the timely implementation of the payments.
This development underscores the government’s efforts to support the NYSC scheme and enhance the financial stability of its participants.
