The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), one-half of the Organized Labour has announced the continuation of the nationwide strike which began on Monday.
The announcement was made in a post via its official X handle on Tuesday.
“Until we hear from Our Organs at our Meeting scheduled for today 4th June , We are still on Strike,” it read.
The NLC, alongside the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have been negotiating a new National Minimum Wage for Nigerian Workers for months but resolved to embark on strike and cripple economic activities due to what it termed “nonchalant attitude” of the Nigerian Government towards finding a solution to the debacle.
The Federal Government proposed ₦60,000 as the minimum wage in the last meeting before the strike commenced. This is up from the ₦57,000 earlier suggested.
However, the Labour Unions are not backing down on their request for a ₦494,000 per month pay for Nigerian workers.
Meanwhile, less than 24hrs after the strike that affected virtually every sector of the country began, the Federal Government, through the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume convened an emergency meeting with the Labour leaders and reached an agreement late into the night.
The agreement highlighted President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to rewarding Nigerian workers with a minimum wage higher than the ₦60,000 earlier proposed.
