Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State is set to begin the upgrade of Ibadan’s Alakia Airport to international standards today, as announced by his Special Adviser on Media, Sulaimon Olanrewaju.
This follows the creation of an 11-member committee led by former Commissioner for Finance, Bimbo Adekanmbi, to oversee the project.
The Federal Government approved the airport upgrade after several state initiatives aligned with Makinde’s vision for economic growth.
At the committee’s inauguration on July 30, Makinde emphasized that the airport transformation is part of his administration’s broader efforts to bolster the state’s economy, particularly through agribusiness. He clarified that the decision was data-driven and not aimed at competing with other states.
“The decision to upgrade the airport was based on science, logic, and data,” Makinde stated. He also highlighted that the foundation for the project was laid during his first tenure and noted the completion of a 500,000-litre aviation fuel facility managed by Bovas Group.
The upgrade is expected to enhance Oyo State’s economic prospects and attract international business, driving regional development.
