The Lagos State Government has revealed that residents collectively spend over ₦13 trillion monthly on electricity consumption.
This staggering figure has been described as unsustainable, especially given the persistent challenges of unreliable power supply.

- Government’s Concern: The Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Mr. Biodun Ogunleye, highlighted the urgent need for alternative and reliable power sources during a press briefing in Alausa, Ikeja. He emphasized that the current expenditure underscores the pressing need for sustainable energy solutions.
- Renewable Energy Initiative: To address the issue, the state government plans to install 22,000 solar-powered streetlights on major highways. This initiative aims to replace diesel-powered generators, which have become increasingly costly to maintain.
- Energy Summit: The announcement was made ahead of the inaugural Lagos Energy Summit, themed “Journey to Energy for All,” scheduled for April 15–18, 2025. The summit will focus on the Lagos State Electricity Law 2024, evolving energy policies, and strategies to achieve electricity generation and distribution targets.
