The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has announced that the Ibadan Airport will be closed for six months starting in early March 2025.
Michael Achimugu, Director, Public Affairs and Consumer Protection made this known on Friday via his X handle.
“Subject to new information, Ibadan airport may be shut down for six months for maintenance/upgrade, starting from early March,” the tweet read.
This closure is necessary to allow for essential maintenance and upgrades to transform the airport into an international hub.

- Closure Period: The airport will be shut down from early March 2025 and is expected to reopen in September 2025.
- Upgrade Plans: The upgrade will include extending the runway, expanding current facilities, and improving infrastructure to support international flights. A new international terminal is also under construction.
- Government Approval: President Bola Tinubu approved the upgrade of the Ibadan Airport to international status in June 2024. Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State confirmed the president’s approval and revealed that construction on the new terminal began in January 2025.
- First Phase Completion: The first phase of the upgrade, which began in September 2024, involves extending the runway to 3,000 meters from the previous 2,400 meters. This phase is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
The closure and subsequent upgrades are part of efforts to enhance air travel and ensure that the Ibadan Airport meets international standards.
