President Bola Tinubu, in July 2024, signed the ₦70,000 minimum wage bill into law, marking the end of extended negotiations with labor unions, government representatives, and the private sector.
While some governors have committed to this new federal minimum, others have gone a step further, promising higher wages in their states.
1. Governor Babájídé Sanwó-Olú (Lagos State)
On October 16, 2024, Governor Babájídé Sanwó-Olú announced an ₦85,000 minimum wage for Lagos State workers, raising it ₦15,000 above the federal minimum. He highlighted Lagos’s high cost of living as a factor and set a goal to increase the minimum wage further to ₦100,000 by January 2025.
2. Muhammad Yahaya (Gombe State)
Gombe State Governor Muhammad Yahaya, on October 15, 2024, signed an agreement with the Nigeria Labour Congress to set a new minimum wage of ₦71,500 for the state.
3. Governor, Siminalayi Fubara (Rivers State)
Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara approved a new minimum wage of ₦85,000 for civil servants, aligning with Lagos State’s recent wage adjustment.
This occured on October 18, 2024.
4. Governor Dàpọ̀ Abíọ́dún (Ogun State)
Ogun State Governor Dàpọ̀ Abíọ́dún approved a new minimum wage of ₦77,000, as announced by Tokunbo Talabi, Secretary to the State Government on October 15, 2024.
5. Lucky Aiyedatiwa (Ondo State)
On October 12, 2024, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa announced an increase in the minimum wage for Ondo State employees to ₦73,000 during the kickoff of his campaign for the November 16 governorship election.
6. Ahmed Ododo (Kogi State)
Kogi State Governor Usman Ododo approved a new minimum wage of ₦72,500 for state civil servants, with immediate implementation. Additionally, he announced a one-year suspension of taxes on the new wage.
7. Umo Eno (Akwa Ibom State)
Akwa Ibom State Government under the leadership of Governor Umo Eno, on October 23, 2024, announced ₦80,000 as its Minimum Wage.
8. Douye Diri (Bayelsa State)
Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State on October 27, 2024, announced an ₦80,000 minimum wage for civil service workers, effective November 1, 2024. He also approved an increase in the monthly pension for retirees and allocated ₦7 billion to address outstanding gratuity liabilities.
9. Mohammed Bago (Niger State)
Governor Mohammed Umar Bago of Niger State, on October 28, 2024, announced a new minimum wage of ₦80,000 for state workers, effective November 2024.
10. Peter Mbah (Enugu State)
Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has approved the sum of ₦80,000 as the minimum wage for the state’s workers. This was announced on October 24, 2024.
11. Francis Nwifuru (Ebonyi State)
Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru has approved the payment of ₦75,000 minimum wage to civil servants in the state. This was made known on October 27, 2024.
12. Nasir Idris (Kebbi State)
Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State has approved N75,000 as minimum wage for the state workers. He has also directed the State’s Accountant-General and the Ministry of Finance to begin the payment of the new minimum wage immediately.
Abia State Governor Alex Otto, Anambra’s Charles Chukwuma Soludo & Dikko Umar Radda of Katsina have all agreed to pay ₦70,000 as directed by the Federal Government.
Meanwhile, some other states are currently setting up their minimum wage implementation committees.
