The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) has expressed strong opposition to the recent increase in Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) pump prices, warning that it could lead to social unrest and worsen poverty among Nigerian workers.
In a statement issued by its president, Festus Osifo, on Wednesday, the TUC criticized the government’s decision to raise petrol prices to N897 and N855 per liter, up from N617, without consulting key stakeholders.
TUC argued that this sudden hike would deepen the economic hardship faced by Nigerians, especially the working class. The union urged the government to immediately reverse the price increase, implement policies to strengthen the naira, and take steps to ease the suffering of citizens.
“The sudden hike in fuel and electricity costs will only exacerbate these challenges, leading to further hardship and potential social unrest,” the statement read.
TUC called for swift government action to restore public confidence and prevent a further decline in living standards.
