A large group of Nigerians, mainly youths, have gathered at the NNPCL towers in Abuja to demand the resignation of Mele Kyari, the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited.
Led by civil society organizations, the protesters blame Kyari for rising fuel prices, fuel shortages, and economic challenges.
Holding signs with messages like “we demand the immediate resignation of Kyari,” they accused the NNPCL leadership of incompetence. Abdullahi Bilal, a convener, called for the elimination of the “fraudulent fuel subsidy” and criticized the importation of low-quality fuel.
“Today, we call for the immediate resignation of Mele Kyari, the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL).
“We demand the complete removal of the fraudulent fuel subsidy regime that has only served to enrich a select few. Full deregulation is necessary to introduce transparency, competition and fairness to our oil sector.
“We also demand an end to the importation of adulterated fuel into Nigeria. This harmful practice must stop immediately and those responsible must be held accountable for the damage caused to our vehicles, businesses, and livelihoods”, he said.
