Fire destroys Ibadan market

A devastating fire broke out earlier today at the Moniya market in the Akinyele Local Government Area of Oyo State, Ibadan.

The blaze, which started around 12:30 am, destroyed goods worth millions of naira and ravaged 17 shops. The fire is believed to have been triggered by a power surge.

Local authorities, including the Babaloja of Moniya Garage, Kolawole Balogun, and Chairman of the Garage, Saliu Bello, were alerted by a security guard about the fire. They expressed deep concern over the extent of the losses, with Balogun stating,

“We lost multimillion-naira goods. The prompt arrival of the fire service prevented even greater devastation”. Many traders also lost cash stored in their shops overnight.

Several victims have called on the government to provide immediate support for those affected. The fire service’s quick response helped to contain the blaze, but the damage remains significant.
