FG allocates ₦100bn for UCH, UNILAG Solar Mini-Grids

The Federal Government has earmarked ₦100 billion in the proposed 2025 budget to install solar mini-grids in selected federal universities, teaching hospitals, and government institutions.

This initiative, pending approval by the National Assembly, is overseen by the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) and aims to provide reliable, affordable, and eco-friendly power to these institutions.

Abba Aliyu, Managing Director of the REA, stated that once the budget is approved and signed into law by President Bola Tinubu, the project will commence.

“The UCH is part of the five that we are looking at starting. We want to do the University of Ibadan plus the teaching hospital; Obafemi Awolowo University; University of Nigeria, Nsukka; and Ahmadu Bello University,” he said.

The initiative is part of the National Public Sector Solarisation Initiative, designed to reduce the cost of governance by transitioning public institutions from diesel and generators to solar power.

Recall, the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) recently agreed to restore electricity supply to some sections of the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan in Oyo State following a 100-day power outage characterised by series of protests and the visit of the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu.
