FAO to support govt on flood

To ensure food security, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) has decided to support Nigeria with tools to lessen flood.

Climate change as a result of flooding is a major cause of food insecurity, as stated by Koffy Dominique, the Country Representative in Nigeria and Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) at a workshop on ‘Anticipatory Action for Flood Risk in Sahel’ in Abuja.

“Flood has destroyed a lot of farmland and crops capable of feeding millions of people in the nation, which influenced the ongoing workshop because we are now battling with a serious security situation. There is need to support the government to equip farmers for better cultivation and boost production.

“This is the essence of the workshop, to provide information to communities on improving early warning, surveillance risk to help us invest in a better ways as we now have relevant governing bodies that will set up a task force to carry out the implementation process.

About 52 million persons, he said, are experiencing food insecurity due to flooding and other challenges.
