The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has clarified that the recent increase in corps members’ allowances has not yet been implemented due to a lack of funds.
News VEO reports that the Federal Government had approved a hike in corps members’ monthly allowance from ₦33,000 to ₦77,000, effective from July 2024.
The announcement was confirmed in a letter from the National Salaries, Incomes, and Wages Commission, dated September 25, 2024, and signed by its Chairman, Mr. Ekpo Nta.
Despite this official communication, corps members did not receive the new allowance in September, sparking outcry and claims that the announcement was merely political.
In an interview with BBC Hausa, NYSC Director-General Brigadier General Yushau Ahmed explained that the delay was due to the non-release of the necessary funds. He also mentioned that NYSC staff salaries had been increased several months ago, but the implementation had similarly been delayed.
“We are hopeful the new pay will be implemented soon, but the funds have not been released yet. There is no specified date for the payment, but the increase has been approved since July 29, 2024,” Ahmed stated.
