The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) announced that it has received ₦2 million from Asiwaju Adegboyega Solomon Awomolo (SAN), a beneficiary of the defunct Federal Government Student Loan Scheme from the 1970s.
Awomolo, who used the loan during his undergraduate studies at the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) in the 1975/1976 and 1976/1977 academic sessions, repaid the loan in full, demonstrating his commitment to the nation.
In a statement signed by Mrs. Oseyemi Oluwatuyi, Director of Corporate Communications at NELFUND, it was highlighted that the loan of ₦1,000 at the time played a crucial role in helping Awomolo complete his law degree.
Despite facing challenges in repaying the loan over the years, he finally fulfilled his obligation, expressing gratitude to the Nigerian government for the financial support.
Awomolo praised NELFUND for its transparency and ongoing efforts to provide educational funding to deserving students, noting the organization’s role in enabling access to education for indigent students across the country.
His ₦2 million repayment marks the full settlement of his debt, reflecting his dedication to his responsibility. This gesture follows a similar instance from August 27, 2024, when another Nigerian repaid ₦3.18 million in student loans.
The funds will be reinvested to support future students in need of educational assistance.
