The Federal Government of Nigeria has issued a warning for five days of heavy rainfall, which may lead to flooding in 22 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) from October 14 to 18, 2024.
The National Flood Early Warning Systems Centre has identified communities along Rivers Donga, Benue, and Ogun as high-risk areas, urging residents to evacuate.
States at risk include:
- Osun (Ede, Ile-Ife, Ilesa)
- Delta (Escravos)
- Cross River (Ikom)
- Anambra (Onitsha)
- Taraba (Wukari, Donga, Mutum Biyu)
- Kebbi (Birnin-Kebbi)
- Gombe (Bajoga)
- Katsina (Funtua)
- Borno (Biu)
- Kaduna (Kaduna)
- Niger (Bida)
- Kwara (Jebba)
- Bauchi (Kirfi)
- Plateau (Shendam)
- FCT (Gwagwalada)
- Kano (Sumaila)
- Oyo (Kishi)
- Sokoto (Silame)
- Zamfara (Majara)
NiMet, on its part, predicted thunderstorms and rains from Sunday to Tuesday across the country.
It also advises residents to stay informed, avoid flood-prone areas, and adhere to safety advisories.
