The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has voiced serious concerns over the increasing number of flight delays and cancellations in the country, with 190 domestic flights cancelled within the last two months.
Acting Director-General of Civil Aviation, Capt. Chris Najomo, revealed these statistics during a stakeholders’ meeting in Abuja.
In September 2024, out of 5,291 domestic flights operated, 2,434 were delayed and 79 were cancelled. Similarly, in October 2024, 2,791 flights out of 5,513 were delayed, with 111 flights cancelled. Najomo emphasized that delays and cancellations disrupt plans, cause financial losses, and undermine confidence in the industry.
Najomo reminded airlines of their obligations under the Nigeria Civil Aviation (Consumer Protection) Regulations, 2023, which mandate that passengers be promptly informed of schedule changes, delays, or cancellations.
He also stressed that airlines must provide refreshments, accommodation, and alternative travel arrangements for disruptions beyond acceptable limits.
