President Bola Tinubu has officially inaugurated the 700 km Lagos-Calabar coastal highway project.
The project is estimated to cost about ₦15 trillion.
Tinubu, who cut the tape at exactly 6:03 PM in Lagos, was accompanied by Minister of Works Dave Umahi, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and around eight governors, including the Chairman of the Nigerian Governor’s Forum, Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq.
Tinubu, in his speech, affirmed his administration’s commitment to seeing the road completed in his tenure.
“It’s my bragging day. We will do this road. We are determined to do it,” Tinubu said.
“The project is just more than a mere road. It’s a symbol of hope, unity, and prosperity. It will connect communities, bring prosperity to people, create opportunities for millions. We are at it.
“Looking to the right side of the road, you have opportunities… To the left side of it, you have prosperity. For our nation to excel, we just have to be bold and courageous in our endeavours.”
The Lagos-Calabar coastal highway project, designed to stretch 700 kilometers and pass through nine states, was awarded to Hitech Construction Company Limited under an Engineering, Procurement, Construction, and Financing (EPC+F) arrangement. In this setup, the contractor assumes most of the risk, while the federal government provides counterpart funding.
The federal government began construction in March 2024, starting with the first phase of the project, which covers 47.47 kilometers from Lagos.
