WAEC announced that it withheld the results of 215,267 candidates, which is 11.92 per cent of 1,805,216, the total number of candidates that sat the examination.
Speaking on Monday while announcing the release of the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination results, the Head of Nigeria Office of WAEC, Dr Amos Dangut, made the disclosure.
The 2024 examination took place over seven weeks and six days, from April 30 to June 24, across Nigeria.
Dangut reported that 1,301,941 candidates, or 72.12 per cent, earned credits or higher in at least five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics.
He noted that out of all candidates who sat for the exam in Nigeria, 1,685,889 (93.39 per cent) had their results fully processed and released, while 119,327 candidates (6.61 per cent) are still awaiting the processing of one or more subjects due to unresolved issues.
Dangut pointed out that the increasing use of cell phones in examination halls, despite the ban, and organized cheating in some schools remain persistent challenges.
All cases are currently under investigation, with reports to be presented to the council’s appropriate committee for final decisions. The committee’s decisions will be communicated to the affected candidates through their schools in due course, and candidates can seek redress for malpractice cases via WAEC’s website if they wish.
Of the 1,805,216 candidates who sat for the exam in Nigeria, 896,894 were male (49.68 per cent) and 908,322 were female (50.32 per cent). The exam was conducted in four WAEC member countries: Nigeria, Gambia, Sierra Leone, and Liberia.
During the briefing, Dangut expressed concern that some states remain indebted to the council, resulting in the withholding of results for candidates from those states until payment is made.
He urged the concerned states to settle their debts so that the affected schools and candidates can access their results.
Meanwhile, candidates can check their results through this detailed guide.
