Some masked men in military camouflage suspected to be Yoruba Nation Agitators invaded the Oyo Government Secretariat at around 11am on Saturday morning, threatening the peace of the seat of power and its environs.
According to reports, the armed individuals were positioned at strategic locations within the Secretariat.
While certain individuals were reported to have placed themselves at the entrance to the Governor’s office gate, others were observed at the entrance to the House of Assembly Gate, with additional personnel stationed at the main entrance.
It was gathered that the situation proved too hot for Men of the Nigerian Police Force and the Amotekun Corps to handle as they tried to no avail.
Also, the situation nearly escalated into chaos as the security personnel clashed in a gunfire exchange with the protesters.
Additionally, tear gas was deployed, causing panic among residents in the vicinity.
Drivers traveling along the route began to take alternate paths, while other commuters hurried to find safety.
Travelers heading towards the Secretariat were rerouted via Customs Junction due to the closure of traffic along the Secretariat-Queen Elizabeth Road.
Despite the attempts made by the Executive Assistant to the Governor on Security, CP Sunday Odukoya (retired), to defuse the situation, the masked gunmen remained adamant about raising their flag within the Secretariat premises.
However, the situation shifted when military personnel from the 2nd Division of the Army arrived approximately an hour later. Some of the demonstrators at the entrance gate reportedly fled upon their arrival.
The military officers, described as stern-looking, reportedly pursued the masked protesters.
Shopkeepers, businesses, and residents in Bodija, Ikolaba, and along the Awolowo route promptly closed their shops and doors in response to the unfolding events.
However, some of the demonstrators were apprehended.
