Lately, there has been a string of crimes generally on the rise in the Federal capital territory, Abuja. ranging from kidnapping, robbery and assaults on human lives and property. There are more voices urging the Federal government to declare a State-of-Emergency on basis of security to properly address these security breaches and issues.
Amongst one of the sensational causes is the case of Najibah and her sisters, a whole family of sisters that were kidnapped in Abuja few weeks back and some other incidents and kidnapping cases.
Amidst all these, Socio-political activist and critic, Chief Adesunbo Onitiri, made this similar call in Lagos, adding that a state of emergency on insecurity is important in view of the current precarious and devastating incidents of kidnapping, banditry and other criminal activities in the country.
He asserts that insecurity is a pressing issue that has resulted in the loss of thousands of lives and the destruction of properties worth billions of naira. Consequently, it necessitates immediate attention and the implementation of effective measures. He pointed out that the state of insecurity in the country has reached a devastating peak which calls for major concern as no one is safe anywhere in the country.
He declared “Kidnapping and other criminal activities are no longer the preserved occurrences in the northern part of the country. It’s daily creeping gradually into the south. The recent bomb blast in the heart of Ibadan city also calls for major national concern, and attention, ”
He stated that during the implementation of this measure, the government must engage in a comprehensive campaign against kidnappers and bandits, and also pursue their sponsors, ensuring that all relevant information is made public, regardless of their social status or influential positions in society.
Onitiri called for the unity of the country, that the country must come together to tackle the issue of insecurity as a collective force and that, its only through this means that tranquillity and foreign investments can flourish and this can only be assured in a society that has adequate security.
