The Oyo State House of Assembly has approved a bill renaming The First Technical University to Abiola Ajimobi Technical University.
The bill passed during Wednesday’s session after going through the third reading.
Hon. Oluwafemi Fowokanmi, the Chairman of the Committee on Tertiary Institutions which presented the report before the house explained that the law would grant the institution similar benefits to other state-owned institutions.
Hon. Fowokanmi highlighted that the institution’s funding comes from local governments’ scholarship payments and its internally generated revenue.
He emphasized that renaming it to Abiola Ajimobi Technical University, Ibadan, confirms its status as a state-owned tertiary institution, enabling it to receive subsidies like other institutions in the state.
Hon. Fowokanmi added that the change will enable the institution to admit students through the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and lower tuition fees, thus increasing access for indigenous admission seekers.
Governor Seyi Makinde previously requested the repeal of the law establishing the institution, proposing the name change to Abiola Ajimobi Technical University, Ibadan. In his letter to the House, the governor explained that this step aligns the institution’s governance structures with those of other state-owned institutions.
Established in 2017 by late Governor Abiola Ajimobi, The First Technical University is located in Ibadan.
