Nigerian workers in the telecommunications and electricity sectors have issued a threat to shut down the National Grid and telecom services if Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President Joe Ajaero is arrested by the Nigeria Police Force.
This ultimatum is set for midnight on Wednesday, August 21.
The threat was conveyed in separate notices issued on Tuesday by Dominic Igwebike of the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) and Mary Nwosu of the National Union of Postal and Telecommunications Employees (NUPTE).
The police had summoned Ajaero on Monday for questioning on Tuesday over allegations of terrorism financing and other charges.
However, Ajaero rejected the late invitation and rescheduled to meet on Wednesday, August 29.
In response, NUEE and NUPTE have vowed to halt operations if Ajaero is arrested, with NUEE members directed to “down tools from 12 midnight, August 21, 2024.” NUPTE has echoed this stance, signaling potential disruptions in the postal and telecom sectors.
The NLC has also threatened a nationwide strike if Ajaero is detained.
The looming strike poses a significant risk to Nigeria’s economy, given the critical role of electricity and telecommunications in the country’s infrastructure.
