The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) is preparing for a potential indefinite nationwide strike, warning that it will commence at midnight if any harm befalls its president, Joe Ajaero.
This decision was announced in a communique by Ado Kabiru Sani, NLC deputy president, following the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting on Tuesday.
The NEC gathered to address the police’s invitation to Ajaero concerning allegations of “terrorism financing.” While the NLC emphasized that Ajaero would honour the police invitation, they strongly refuted the accusations, deeming them baseless.
In the communique, the NLC directed its affiliates to mobilize workers nationwide.
The union also expressed readiness to undertake mass protests or industrial action if necessary to protect its leadership. Should any untoward incident occur regarding Ajaero or other NLC leaders, the strike would begin at midnight.
The NEC further urged civil society groups and the Nigerian public to stand in solidarity with the labour movement in its defense of democratic values.
At the time of reporting, Ajaero had complied with the police invitation.
