Labour Party crisis escalates as thugs, executives clash

Julius Abure, Sacked Labour Party National Chairman

Chaos broke out on Monday as suspected thugs assaulted members and executives of the Edo State chapter of the Labour Party who were protesting against the continued tenure of the National Chairman, Julius Abure, despite his alleged suspension last week.

Around 20 hoodlums attacked the demonstrators as they arrived, causing them to scatter into nearby streets for safety, according to reports.

The situation was eventually brought under control after security operatives intervened and urged calm from both parties.

The embattled national chairman, who has been in conflict with the NLC over accusations of attempting to take over the party, was suspended on Friday by his Ward in the Arue-Uromi area of Esan North-East Local Government in Edo State for alleged high-handedness and anti-party actions.

A letter dated May 14, 2024, announcing the suspension, and another letter dated May 15, 2024, confirming the suspension, were both endorsed during a meeting of the state executive committee on Friday evening in Benin. The suspension takes effect immediately.
