Senate approves 300% pay rise for Judicial Officers, CJN

Chief Justice of the Federation (CJN), Justice Olukayode Ariwoola

The Nigerian Senate has approved a bill seeking improved salaries, allowances, and fringe benefits for the Chief Justice of the Federation (CJN) and other judicial office holders in Nigeria.

This is sequel to the adoption of a report by Mohammed Monguno, the Chairman Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights, and Legal Matters.

The approval increases the salaries and allowances by 300%.

According to Monguno, the increment under consideration has been captured in the 2024 Appropriation Act.

“Adequate remuneration will allow judicial officers to focus on their professional development without worrying about financial constraint,” Monguno said, while delivering his report.

“Hence, it will improve their professionalism and decision making skills, and fair compensation for judicial officers is crucial for maintaining public trust in judiciary’s impartiality and integrity.”

If President Bola Tinubu assents to it as expected, the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) will now earn ₦64 million annually, the President of the Court of Appeal is to earn ₦62.4 million annually while the Justices of the Supreme Court will earn ₦61.4 million annually.
