The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, announced that security agencies have gathered intelligence implicating a Senator in sponsoring the #EndBadGovernanceinNigeria protests.
Speaking at a press briefing after a security meeting in Abuja on Thursday, Wike revealed that the Senator, who will soon be questioned by relevant agencies, allegedly enlisted security agents to deliver food to the protesters.
“We have intelligence that a senator had some security agencies lead a group to provide food for the protesters.
That is sponsorship,” Wike stated. He emphasized that the Senator would be invited for questioning to explain his actions against the government.
Wike reiterated the need for protesters to comply with a court order restricting them to the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, especially given the violence and fatalities reported on the first day of protests.
He warned that intelligence reports indicated plans by miscreants to hijack the protests and cause property destruction, which security operatives would prevent.
“We believe in acting according to the rule of law. Protests are a democratic right, and the government should address the issues raised. However, obeying the court order is crucial,” Wike said.
He noted an incident where protesters attempted to move into Eagle Square and warned against further attempts to incite violence.
“Security agencies will not permit property destruction or loss of lives. Protesters should conduct their activities at the MKO Abiola Stadium as per the court’s directive,” he concluded.
