Domestic travellers paid 25 per cent more for air flights in July 2024.
This is according to a new report by the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics (NBS).
NBS said: “In air travel, the average fare paid by air passengers for specified routes single journey was N98,561.74 in July 2024, showing an increase of 9.65 per cent compared to the previous month (June 2024).
“On a YoY basis, the fare rose by 25.12 per cent from N78,775.74 in July 2023.”
The recent data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) reveals a decline in transportation costs despite the federal government’s move to raise tax charges, which had sparked concerns from the Airline Operators of Nigeria over multiple taxation.
While airfare surged in July 2024, commuters enjoyed reduced costs for bus, motorcycle, and waterway journeys.
According to the NBS:
- City Bus Fare: The average fare dropped by 2.18% from ₦963.58 in June 2024 to ₦942.61 in July 2024. Year-on-year, this reflects a significant 29.46% decrease from ₦1,336.29 in July 2023.
- Intercity Bus Fare: The average fare slightly increased by 0.35%, rising from ₦7,092.03 in June 2024 to ₦7,117.17 in July 2024.
- Okada (Motorcycle) Fare: The average fare for motorcycle journeys rose by 1.22%, with commuters paying ₦483.33 in July 2024 compared to ₦477.49 in June 2024. Year-on-year, there was a 25.20% decline from ₦646.12 in July 2023.
- Water Transport Fare: The average fare for waterway travel decreased by 0.44%, with passengers paying ₦1,403.06 in July 2024, down from ₦1,406.70 in July 2023.
State-level data showed significant variation in transport costs:
- Anambra recorded the highest intercity bus fare at ₦9,566.89, followed by Gombe at ₦8,299.44.
- Kwara had the lowest intercity bus fare at ₦5,518.38, followed by Ebonyi with ₦5,596.11.
- Taraba led with the highest city bus fare at ₦1,457.28, followed by Ondo with ₦1,200.94.
- Adamawa recorded the lowest city bus fare at ₦500.00, followed by Abia at ₦505.35.
