The Chief Judge of Nigeria, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, has called for a meeting with the head judge of the Federal High Court and the head judge of Kano State High Court because of different temporary orders regarding the Kano Emirate issue.
In Kano State, two courts have given contradictory temporary orders about the Kano Emirate dispute.
On Tuesday, Judge S. A. Amobeda from the Federal High Court in Kano commanded the removal of the reinstalled emir, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II, from Gidan Rumfa palace.
But, Judge Amina Adamu Aliyu from Kano State High Court issued a different command, preventing the police, State Security Services (SSS), and Nigerian Army from removing, bothering, or arresting Sanusi.
Sanusi and Aminu Ado Bayero are in a fierce competition for the royal position, causing protests from their supporters in Kano.
Governor Abba Yusuf reinstated Sanusi at a ceremony in the Government House after repealing the law that former governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje used to remove and exile him in 2020.
However, a Federal High Court in Kano issued a ruling on May 23 preventing the state government from applying the Emirate Council Repeal Law 2024, which led to Sanusi’s return and Bayero’s removal from the throne.
When Bayero came back to Kano and settled in Nassarawa Palace, Governor Yusuf called for his arrest, expressing worries about escalating tensions in the state.
This led to soldiers being sent to the Nassarawa Palace. On Monday, a judge at the Kano State High Court prevented Bayero from declaring himself as the Emir of Kano and instructed his removal from Nassarawa Palace.
Justice Aisha Adamu Aliyu, the judge overseeing the case, also prohibited the ousted emirs from the dissolved emirates from taking on any royal duties in Kano.
