Bobrisky sentenced to six-months in jail

Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, has been handed a six-month jail sentence by the Federal High Court in Lagos, with no possibility of paying a fine.

Last week Friday, April 5, 2024, Bobrisky was convicted by Justice Abimbola Awogboro for damaging and defacing Naira notes, following his arrest and prosecution by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The court, however, dismissed the money laundering charges against him.

During his arraignment on Friday, Bobrisky told the court that he was not aware of the law on abusing the naira.

“I know, My Lord. My Lord, I wish that you could give me a second chance to use my platform to inform and educate my followers about spraying money, he said.

“I would do a video on my page and I will educate people about spraying money.

“I will not repeat it again. I regret my actions,” he added.

Following Bobrisky’s guilty plea to four counts of tampering with ₦490,000 by spraying, the court set a date for sentencing.

Justice Awogboro emphasized that the verdict would discourage others from mistreating Nigerian currency.

Nonetheless, the judge ruled that the six-month jail term begins on March 24, 2024, the day of Bobrisky’s arrest.

Before delivering the sentence, there was a brief moment of drama in the courtroom on Friday when the Judge inquired about Bobrisky’s gender, to which he promptly responded that he was a man.
