Sheikh Hasina, Bangladeshi PM fled the palace following the invasion by protesters.
This marks the culmination of more than a month of deadly anti-government protests.
Jubilant-looking crowds waved flags, some dancing on top of a tank in the streets of Dhaka, the capital on Monday morning before hundreds broke through the gates of Hasina’s official residence.
Bangladesh’s Channel 24 broadcast images of crowds running into the compound, waving to the camera as they celebrated.
A source close to Hasina, 76, had earlier told AFP she had left her palace for a “safer place.”
Meanwhile, news coming in as at press time revealed that the Prime Minister has resigned.
An interim government would be formed, according to Bangladesh’s army chief Waker-Uz-Zaman.
“We will form an interim government,” Waker said in a broadcast to the nation on state television.
Sheikh Hasina once helped rescue Bangladesh from military rule, but her time in power has seen the mass arrest of her political opponents and human rights sanctions against her security forces.
Since July, the autocratic premier has faced mass protests that began as university student-led rallies against civil service job quotas, but which have morphed into some of the worst unrest of her 15-year tenure, with opponents demanding she step down.
The protests were largely peaceful until attacks on demonstrators by police and pro-government student groups, sparking international condemnation.
Days ago, the use of Instagram, TikTok, WhatsApp, YouTube and other social media networks was banned by her government.
