The Federal Government, led by Minister of Education Prof. Tahir Mamman, is set to meet today with representatives from the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and other key stakeholders to address unresolved issues that have led to ASUU’s recent threat of a strike.
ASUU had issued a 21-day ultimatum due to concerns such as the revitalization fund for public universities, unpaid earned academic allowances, withheld salaries, promotion arrears, and issues with the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS).
At a press conference marking one year of the current administration, Mamman indicated that many of these issues are already being addressed, including the president’s directive for ASUU’s exit from IPPIS.
The minister emphasized the president’s commitment to maintaining academic stability and urged ASUU to approach negotiations with an open mind to reach solutions that benefit all parties.
This meeting comes after previous strikes, including one that lasted over eight months during the Buhari administration, which severely disrupted academic activities in Nigerian universities.
