2025 AFCON will take place in Morocco in July and August – CAF

AFCON Trophy

According to a CAF official who spoke to AFP on Tuesday, the Confederation of African Football has decided in principle that Morocco will host the 2025 Cup of Nations in July and August of that year.

The next Africa Cup of Nations is scheduled to take place in January and February, but organizers are running out of time to hold a qualifying competition since CAF president Patrice Motsepe declined to confirm the dates earlier this month.

But scheduling it for June and July of the following year would conflict with FIFA’s expanded Club World Cup, which is scheduled to be in North America.

There was “an agreement in principle between CAF and the Moroccan Football Federation for the AFCON to be held during the summer, more precisely in July and August” of 2025, a competitions committee member told AFP on Monday while speaking on the condition of anonymity.

“This agreement was found with the support of FIFA after talks that began several months ago and which intensified during the last edition which finished this month in Ivory Coast,” the source stated.

The dates that are currently being suggested are July 20–August 16–17, 2025.The dates of the last two Africa Cup of Nations were both rescheduled.

The Cameroon-hosted 2021 competition took place in January and February of 2022. The most recent event was postponed due to weather concerns, originally slated for June and July of last year.

The draw for the preliminary round of the tournament holds today.
