The Federal Government has exempted all electricity companies, including Generation Companies (GenCos) and Distribution Companies (DisCos), from paying Withholding Tax. This exemption is detailed in the new Withholding Tax regulation document signed by the Minister of Finance, Wale Edun. The new Withholding Tax regulation was proposed by the Tax and Fiscal Policy Committee led by Taiwo Oyedele and took effect from July 1, 2024. In the first quarter of 2024, Nigeria’s expenditure on servicing the debt incurred for building its railways far exceeded the revenue generated by its railway system. This is according to data from the National Bureau of Statistics which explained that the country spent 2,470% more on servicing railway debt than it earned from railway services revenue.
