Jurgen Klopp, who took over as Reds manager in October 2015 and whose contract was set to expire in 2026, has announced his intention to leave the position at the end of the current campaign.
Klopp guided Liverpool to their first league title in thirty years in 2019–20 after winning the Champions League the year before. “I told the club already in November,” the German told the Liverpool website.
In an interview with the club’s website on Friday morning, the German manager made the announcement, stating that he is “running out of energy” following his victories in the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, and Carabao Cup.
“At the end of the season, I will be leaving the club,” he declared. “I know that hearing this for the first time can be shocking for many people right now, but I can definitely explain it, or at least try to.”
“I adore everything about this club—the players, the staff, the city, and our supporters as well as the club itself.” I adore everything. However, the fact that I am still going with this choice indicates to you how certain I am that it is the right one.
The fact is, I’m, how shall I put it, exhausted. Naturally, I have no issues at all right now. I have known for a while that I will eventually need to make an announcement, but for now, everything is perfect. I am aware that I am unable to complete the task repeatedly.
“The least I owe you is the truth—and that is the truth—after the years we had together, after all the time we spent together, and after all the things we went through together, the respect and love for you grew.”
Both Pep Lijnders and Peter Krawietz, Klopp’s aides, are set to depart in the summer, with the former pursuing a career in management.
