Morocco coach, Walid Regragui, has been granted a two-match ban by the Confederation of African Football following a post-match confrontation with Democratic Republic of Congo captain Chancel Mbemba at the Africa Cup of Nations.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) declared Regragui’s suspension and stated they planned to file an appeal.
Regragui never broke the spirit of fair play, hence the FRMF “decided to appeal this incomprehensible decision,” according to the statement.
Regragui’s suspension, however, went into force for Wednesday’s Cup of Nations group match against Zambia, when assistant coach Rachid Benmahmoud started in lieu of Regragui.
Prior to playing Zambia, the 2022 World Cup semi-finalists already knew they would advance to the following round.
Following Sunday’s 1-1 tie between Morocco and the Democratic Republic of the Congo in San-Pedro, players and personnel from both teams got into a fight, which resulted in the incident between Regragui and Mbemba.
Regragui came onto the field and seemed to argue angrily with Mbemba, the Marseille defender, while simultaneously making an effort to shake his hand.
