Nigeria’s electricity exports have reached a value of $112 million.
This was made known in a recent data from the International Trade Centre.
As of January 18, 2025, Nigeria is exporting electricity to two neighboring African nations: the Republic of Benin and Niger. Exports to Benin amounted to $66 million, with a potential export value of $82 million, leaving an unrealized potential of $16 million.
Similarly, electricity exports to Niger were valued at $46 million, with a potential for $51 million in exports, leaving an unrealized potential of $4.1 million.
While the export data indicates growth in the sector, concerns remain about the state of electricity supply within Nigeria itself.
Critics argue that celebrating electricity exports is premature when the country is still grappling with persistent power outages and blackouts.
