The Guardian, a prominent U.K. newspaper, has announced its departure from the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter.
The decision comes amid concerns over the influence of billionaire owner Elon Musk during the U.S. election process.
In a statement released on Wednesday, The Guardian cited the increasing negatives of being on X, stating that resources could be better utilized in promoting their journalism elsewhere.
The newspaper highlighted the often disturbing content found on the platform, including far-right conspiracy theories and racism, as a significant factor in their decision.
The Guardian also pointed to Musk’s role in the recent U.S. election, describing X as a “toxic” platform used to influence political discourse. Musk, a high-profile supporter of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, was recently appointed as one of the heads of a new “department of government efficiency.”
Despite the departure, The Guardian’s journalists will continue to use X as a news-gathering source, although the platform will play a diminished role in promoting their work.
All Guardian-related accounts on X have now been archived.
