Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has approved a new minimum wage of ₦80,000 for state workers.
This was confirmed by the state’s Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Prince Dotun Oyelade, on Wednesday.
The approval follows recommendations from a technical committee of government and labour representatives. The new salary scale will take effect once the committee completes the consequential adjustment process.
Oyelade highlighted the National Bureau of Statistics’ recognition of Oyo State as the most worker-friendly in Southern Nigeria. He commended Makinde’s commitment to timely salary payments and noted that the governor had introduced the previous minimum wage of ₦30,000 upon taking office in 2019.
Since November 2023, the governor has provided a monthly welfare wage supplement of ₦25,000 to active workers and ₦15,000 to pensioners to alleviate the financial strain caused by the federal government’s fuel subsidy removal.
Makinde has also cleared gratuity arrears from 2008 to 2015 and increased gratuity payments.
Additionally, pensioners removed from the payroll by the previous administration have been reinstated, and all retirees receive a festive “Chicken Bonus” during Christmas and New Year.
