The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has given the Federal Government a 15-day ultimatum to address pressing issues hindering the smooth operations of polytechnics and mono-technics in Nigeria or risk facing an extended industrial action.
During a press briefing at the Plateau State Polytechnic, Barkin Ladi, Plateau State, ASUP Zonal Coordinator for Zone B, Lumpye Simji, outlined the key concerns raised at the national executive council’s last meeting.
These concerns revolve around governance challenges in public polytechnics, including violations of the Federal Polytechnics Act, improper appointments of principal officers, and failure to review the suspended “Scheme of Service for Polytechnics” document.
The union is also pushing for the release of the second tranche of the Needs Assessment Intervention Fund and addressing the delayed implementation of a 25/35% salary review for polytechnic workers. Other grievances include non-payment of promotion arrears, particularly in state-owned institutions, and issues with promotions and arrears in federal and state polytechnics.
The union called for an immediate reversal of decisions that violate the Polytechnics Act, a review of the suspended Scheme of Service, and payment of outstanding allowances. They also demanded an end to actions undermining academic boards in the student admissions process and the inclusion of negotiated academic allowances in future budgets.
ASUP stressed that if these demands are not met by October 22, 2024, various forms of industrial action may follow.
