The National Association of Government General and Medical Dental Practitioners, Kano State chapter, has announced plans to begin an indefinite strike on October 1, 2024, following the state’s failure to meet the demands of medical doctors.
The announcement was made by the association’s secretary, Dr. Anas Idris Hassan, during a press briefing on Saturday.
Dr. Hassan stated that despite reaching an agreement with the Kano State Government in June, critical issues such as the post-COVID-19 hazard allowances—paid by the Federal Government since 2021—remain unresolved in Kano.
Additionally, he revealed that newly hired doctors, employed in September 2023, have yet to receive their salaries.
The doctors also raised concerns about the dilapidated condition of Kano’s hospitals and the lack of essential medical equipment, further exacerbating the already critical doctor-to-patient ratio.
Kano, with an estimated population of 20 million, is served by only 600 doctors, resulting in a staggering ratio of one doctor to 33,000 patients—far below the World Health Organization’s standard.
Given the government’s inaction, the medical practitioners have emphasized they have no choice but to proceed with the planned strike.
