King Charles III welcomed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to Buckingham Palace, reinforcing the deep diplomatic ties between Nigeria and the UK.
This private meeting, held on Wednesday, marks the first time the two leaders have met since their encounter at the COP 28 Climate Summit in Dubai.
According to Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, the meeting took place at the King’s request.
During their discussions, both leaders emphasized the shared priority of addressing the complex global challenge of climate change.
President Tinubu affirmed Nigeria’s dedication to combating climate change while maintaining its energy security objectives. He also expressed Nigeria’s readiness to adopt global sustainability strategies, reflecting the country’s leadership in Africa and the Commonwealth.
The two leaders explored opportunities for future collaboration, particularly in preparation for the COP 29 Summit in Azerbaijan and the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Samoa. Both expressed interest in innovative climate financing approaches, with a focus on leveraging Nigeria’s role in Africa and the Commonwealth to strengthen partnerships.
President Tinubu’s visit to the UK follows a recent trip to China, where multiple bilateral agreements were signed.
He is also scheduled to attend the United Nations General Assembly in New York after his stay in the UK.
