The Kano State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has reported that 49 people have lost their lives, and 226 communities across 27 Local Government Areas have been ravaged by floods and windstorms in the state from January 2024 to date.
SEMA’s Executive Secretary, Isyaku Abdullahi-Kubarachi, revealed this on Wednesday, highlighting that the Nigerian Meteorological Agency had earlier predicted severe flooding in 14 local government areas, including Tudun Wada, Gwale, and Wudil, among others.
The disaster destroyed 6,583 houses, impacted 38,814 people, and devastated 8,289 farmlands, covering 36,265 hectares.
The agency responded by distributing relief materials to the victims and conducting workshops to find preventive solutions for environmental hazards. Abdullahi-Kubarachi praised Governor Abba Yusuf for his support and urged residents to avoid building on waterways and to clear drainage systems to mitigate further flooding risks.
Wealthy individuals were also encouraged to contribute relief materials to support the affected communities.
