The Federal Government of Nigeria and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) have scheduled a follow-up meeting for September 6, 2024, to address ongoing concerns and avoid a potential nationwide strike by university lecturers.
The meeting was confirmed by the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, after a session with ASUU leadership on Wednesday at the Federal Ministry of Education.
ASUU’s national executive council, following a meeting at the University of Ibadan on August 19, 2024, had threatened industrial action over the government’s failure to honor the 2009 renegotiated agreement.
The union’s demands include better welfare for lecturers, increased university funding, and a halt to the uncontrolled establishment of new universities.
Minister Mamman acknowledged that many of ASUU’s concerns, some dating back as far as 1981, are being addressed.
He cited the issue of lecturers exiting the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS), which has already been resolved in principle by President Bola Tinubu, with implementation delays due to bureaucratic processes. He expressed optimism that key matters would be resolved by the scheduled meeting.
The Minister also urged ASUU to remain open-minded during negotiations to ensure a balanced representation of the interests of all stakeholders involved.
