President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on Friday, administered the oath of office to Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun as the 23rd Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) in an acting capacity, pending her confirmation by the Senate.
The ceremony took place at the Council Chambers of the State House, Abuja, at approximately 11:38 a.m.
Friday,Justice Kekere-Ekun took her official seat beside the President at 11:45 a.m.
Her appointment follows the retirement of her predecessor, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, and her nomination by the National Judicial Council (NJC) on August 15, 2024.
Justice Kekere-Ekun now becomes the second female jurist to hold the position of CJN, following in the footsteps of Justice Aloma Mariam Mukhtar, who served from 2012 to 2014.
Dignitaries in attendance included Senate President Godswill Akpabio, House Leader Hon Julius Ihonbvere, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwó-Olú, former CJN Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, and several Justices of the Supreme Court.
Key officials such as the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) George Akume, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, and Minister of Information and National Orientation Mohammed Idris were also present.
Justice Kekere-Ekun’s tenure marks a significant moment in Nigeria’s judicial history as she prepares to lead the nation’s judiciary in her new capacity.
