Professional football is about to implement a blue card as part of sin-bin experiments, which will be the first new card color to be extensively used in fifty years.
The Telegraph, a UK daily claims that the groundbreaking action will be made public by the International Football Association Board on Friday as part of new regulations that will cause players to be benched for ten minutes if they intentionally foul or act disrespectfully toward a match referee.
Players will now be sent out if they receive two blue cards in a game or a combination of a blue and a yellow card, which will bring a new twist to dismissals according to the procedures.
According to the source, elite trials may start as early as the summer, but initial testing will not include elite competitors.
Consequently, FA Cup and Women’s FA Cup matches could be part of the trials; the FA is supposedly thinking of offering to test the competitions for the upcoming season.
Referees will have the authority to show blue cards for cynical fouls that end threatening behavior and protests directed at a match official, according to a statement made on the rule.
The card may also be given out to verify that a player who receives two blue cards in a match, or a combination of a yellow and a blue, should be shown a red card.
This groundbreaking decision would mark the introduction of a new card color to elite football for the first time since the 1970 World Cup, when red and yellow cards were used.
