President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed Wale Ẹdun, the Finance Minister and Coordinating Minister of the Economy to analyse the numbers and come up with a new national minimum wage figure.
The proposed wage is to be presented to labour unions by Wednesday.
The order is sequel to a meeting with the Federal Government tripartite team led by the Secretary to Government of the Federation, George Akume, at the presidential villa on Tuesday.
The team included Wale Edun, Budget Minister Atiku Bagudu, Deputy Labour Minister Nkiruka Onyejocha, Information and National Orientation Minister Mohammed Idris, Group CEO of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited Mele Kyari, and Chief of Staff to the President Femi Gbajabiamila.
Mohammed Idris, the Minister of Information and National Orientation disclosed the details of the meeting to newsmen.
“The president has just summoned a meeting of all those who negotiated on behalf of the federal government led by the secretary to the government of the federation, the minister of finance was there, the minister of budget planning, the minister of information, the minister of budget and national planning, the minister of labour, and the NNPCL GMD.
“We were all there to look at all issues and the president has directed the minister of finance to do the numbers and get back to him between today and tomorrow so that we can have figures ready for negotiation with labour,” he said.
Barely 24hrs ago, the FG team led by Akume convened an emergency meeting with the Labour leaders following their strike action that shut down the country on Monday.
Resolutions were reached and it included a commitment by the Federal Government to pay a minimum wage higher than the proposed ₦60,000.
Earlier on Tuesday, the Labour Unions suspended the nationwide strike to give room for a five days back-to-back meetings with the representatives of the Federal Government.
