Chinese smartphone manufacturer OnePlus has recently unveiled its inaugural foldable smartphone, the OnePlus Open. In doing so, OnePlus joins the ranks of other prominent brands such as Samsung, Google, and Xiaomi that have ventured into the foldable smartphone market. To gauge how this new entrant measures up, we’ve taken a closer look at the OnePlus Open in comparison to Apple’s latest flagship offering, the iPhone 15 Pro Max.
The OnePlus Open shares a resemblance with the Samsung Galaxy Fold in its folding mechanism, opening much like a book. When in the folded configuration, the cover screen presents a 6.31-inch display, positioning it between the sizes of the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max. When unfolded, the screen expands to a 7.82-inch display, which, though smaller than an iPad mini, provides a substantial viewing area. Both displays utilize OLED technology and offer a responsive 120Hz refresh rate. Interestingly, OnePlus promotes a “Ceramic Guard” cover glass, which bears a striking similarity to Apple’s Ceramic Shield.
In terms of form factor, the OnePlus Open distinguishes itself from Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro Max, as Apple has yet to venture into the foldable smartphone domain. Nonetheless, the OnePlus Open boasts a premium feel and falls in size between the Z Fold5 and the Pixel Fold. It can be folded down perfectly flat, with an almost imperceptible crease, and is impressively slim and lightweight.
When folded, the OnePlus Open measures 11.7mm in thickness, but upon unfolding, it slims down to a mere 5.8mm. For comparison, the iPhone 15 Pro Max maintains an 8.25mm thickness. In terms of weight, the OnePlus Open tips the scales at 239 grams, which is 18 grams heavier than the iPhone 15 Pro Max.
OnePlus has established a partnership with Hasselblad, a renowned camera company, and this collaboration is reflected in the OnePlus Open’s camera setup. It features a 48-megapixel wide-angle camera, a 64-megapixel telephoto camera equipped with 6x in-sensor lossless zoom, and a 48-megapixel ultra wide-angle camera. Furthermore, there’s a 20-megapixel front-facing selfie camera accessible when the OnePlus Open is unfolded, along with a 32-megapixel selfie camera that comes into play when the device is in its closed state.
In terms of design, the lenses are housed within a substantial circular module at the rear of the device, a design choice reminiscent of the face of a luxury watch, according to OnePlus. While this lens housing is indeed massive, it may pose a minor challenge when capturing photos from certain angles, as your fingers might inadvertently obstruct the lenses.
Additional noteworthy features include the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 mobile platform, a robust 16GB of RAM, a fingerprint sensor integrated into the power button, a substantial 4,805mAh battery for enduring usage, and support for the cutting-edge Wi-Fi 7 technology.
The OnePlus Open is currently available for pre-order, with its official launch scheduled for October 26. Potential buyers can secure this foldable device starting at a price point of $1,700, marking OnePlus’s ambitious entry into the competitive foldable smartphone market.
