Jacob Zuma, ex-President of South Africa has come out to run in the forthcoming elections against his former party, the ruling African National Congress (ANC).
Zuma has been in and out of court and jail in recent years due to series of corruption allegations.
Briefly, he spent time behind bars for contempt of court after refusing to appear before a corruption inquiry. He, however, spent two months out of the 15 months ordered by the court.
The rest of the sentence was commuted by President Cyril Ramaphosa after he was initially freed due to health complains.
He has successfully fought off numerous court challenges from the government in recent months that aimed to invalidate his candidacy by disqualifying the little party he has allied himself with.
Earlier in December, he announced that he would campaign for the small radical uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK, or the “Spear of the Nation” in Zulu) party.
South Africans will vote for parliament on May 29, in what is set to be the tightest election since the introduction of democratic rule with the end of the apartheid era.
It is the elected members who will vote for the president.
